Fall 2012: Applied Public Diplomacy Course

Greetings! Welcome to the American University, School of International Service Applied Public Diplomacy course blog. This will primarily serve as a hub for the student group blogs and other announcements.

Welcome to the Summer Course on Comparative Public Diplomacy. I've taken the liberty of posting the links to all the group blogs for this course. If you haven't already found them yourself - now you can browse them and provide commentary. Most of the regular course announcements, as you've already figured out, will be posted via email and blackboard. (Thanks to International Broadcasting blogger Kim Andrew Elliott for this image!)

Must Be: Christopher Dufour

Howdy folks,

Just a quick reminder that strategic communication and social media analyst, Christopher Dufour will be speaking in our class on Thursday. His linkedin profile reads thusly: Communicator. Inspirator. Entertainer. Creative Dude. Investigator of AWESOME!.

His blog is here: http://www.mustbeawesome.com/

He should provide us with some context for the readings (pro and con) regarding the implications of social media for public diplomacy and strategic communication. He will also speak about career opportunities in fields related to public diplomacy.

See you Thursday!

Another Special Guest Star for Thursday, Feb 10: Shawn Powers

In addition to our guest, John Brown, former senior foreign service officer and now faculty at Georgetown, we will also have Shawn Powers of Georgia State University in attendance. Dr. Powers is a specialist in international broadcasting and public diplomacy. Given the readings focus on the constitutive role of culture in public diplomacy formations - we will also talk about ways in which culture informs the US public diplomacy response to the Egypt crisis, and, how cultural attitudes towards outlets such as Al-Jazeera have shaped the situation in Egypt.

[Powers is the guy standing in the photo; the other two are Loren Jenkins, Foreign Desk Editor for NPR, and Steve Redisch, Executive Editor at VOA]

John Brown is coming to AU

Good news everybody. Former US diplomat and blogger extraordinaire - John Brown - will come to our class on February 10 to give a talk entitled, "Does Public Diplomacy Have a Conscience" - which will help us distinguish PD from more maligned forms of propaganda.

Course blogs links are up!

Enjoy!
